Links

The thought of adding a Links section to this website has led me to a series of uncomfortable realizations that I’m now delighted to share at some length instead of immediately providing the links as advertised in the title.

In principle, I recognize the importance of giving directions to other online places as one of the foundations of the whole movement for a non-commercial and personal web. I have nothing but sympathy and good wishes for webrings, curated directories, and other ways to promote old-school web surfing.

At the same time, my enthusiasm for looking at screens for information of any kind is steadily waning. If I’m researching a specific topic, I’ll turn to the web for information about it, but in this case, I’ll be relying on search engines. To be perfectly honest, I don’t see the space in my life for seeking new and unexpected internet things as a separate activity.

There are many places on the web that I recognize as “interesting” in some abstract sense, but they are rarely interesting for me. I would love to be charmed and intrigued by more random websites I could stumble upon, but either I don’t know where to look, or I’ve become too jaded to have this experience. (In this respect, my attitude towards the World Wide Web seems to mirror my attitude towards the World Wide World.)

It turns out I am a sorry, self-centred individual who is happy to make their own website but does not really care for anybody else’s. Enjoy the following links!

Personal websites I actually visit regularly

Personal websites I found charming and/or intriguing

Personal websites I respect for one reason or another

Personal websites whose design I found inspiring

The following websites served as important references for me in terms of how a personal website might look and work; however, for the most part, I didn’t visit them for ther specific contents.

Most of the well-made and well-thought-out personal websites tend to be made by Tech People. Unfortunately, my interest in Tech topics is limited at best, and various concerns that sometimes go along with being a Tech Person, including “personal development,” “optimization,” and “productivity,” I find thoroughly alienating.
